Mario fans have only heard a snippet of what Jack Black as Bowser will sound like in The Super Mario Bros. Movie ahead of it hitting cinemas this week, and they seem to like it. Black has revealed a little more about what went into playing an accurate Bowser fans would be okay with, even revealing he pulled a little inspiration from Darth Vader.
Two of the most iconic villains in movie and video game history, Bowser and Vader certainly share some of the same DNA in that regard. It's a little surprising to discover the Star Wars baddie helped Black find his Bowser voice, though. “Darth Vader is my favorite part of Star Wars, and without Darth Vader, that movie's really boring,” Black told IGN, replying “I would say yes, a little bit” when asked if the Sith Lord inspired his own performance.

“Darth Vader has a lower register, and I also had to go lower than my natural speaking voice.” The gruff, Vader-inspired voice Black went with for his Bowser wasn't the first option he and the team behind the movie tried out, though. “I tried it with a British accent. I tried it with a little Southern accent. I did a lot of different things and eventually landed on what I did in the movie.”
While Bowser with a British accent sounds like an amusing concept, I'm not entirely sure it would really fit. I'd be too busy expecting the King of the Koopas to offer Mario tea and biscuits as opposed to melting ice castles and trying to overthrow the Mushroom Kingdom.
