J.K. Simmons previews what his expanded role as Jim Gordon in Batgirlwill entail. After spending years in development and switching hands creatively, Batgirl is finally moving into the spotlight for the DCEU. The movie will be an HBO Max exclusive and is expected to debut sometime later this year. Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are the ones behind the camera for Batgirl, and In the Heights breakout Leslie Grace leads the cast as Barbara Gordon.
Plot details for Batgirl are still being kept under wraps, but production has been underway since late 2021. Beyond Grace, the movie has an impressive supporting cast that includes Simmons, Brendan Fraser, and Michael Keaton. Simmons returns for the first time since Justice League to play Commissioner Gordon, while Keaton once again plays Batman; he's also reprising the role in The Flash, which was recently bumped back to 2023. Finally, Fraser will be Batgirl's villain, the pyromaniac Firefly. Though the DCEU is branching out into more standalone features, Batgirl so far looks to be fairly connected to the rest of the universe, as seen through Simmons and Keaton's involvements.

It’s much more than I got to do in my brief stint as Commissioner Gordon in Zack Snyder’s film. And really, it was fun because it was a completely different side of Commissioner Gordon.
