Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 5
One of Anakin's least popular Star Wars prequel traits was his alleged whininess, but Obi-Wan Kenobi has finally justified that infamous character choice. It was always difficult to imagine how the angst-ridden teen from Attack of the Clones could have developed into one of the most feared figures in the galaxy. Fortunately, there is now a satisfying explanation that not only makes Anakin's frustrations justified, but also adds an extra layer to his previously one-note personality.
In the prequel trilogy, actor Hayden Christensen's portrayal of Anakin Skywalker was criticized in certain quarters for being over-simplistic, child-like, and sometimes even annoying. While many of the most egregious examples were toned down during Revenge of the Sith, Anakin's constant griping about Obi-Wan in Attack of the Clones was seen as being at odds with the tragically-heroic figure audiences had been expecting. Several scenes between Anakin and Padmé, for example, were roundly criticized for depicting Anakin as little more than a spoiled child, irritated at being unable to get his way. His claims of being deliberately held back, in particular, were singled out as baseless. Fortunately, however, Obi-Wan Kenobi's flashback scenes have gone a long way toward explaining his annoyance.
