After E3 2023 was canceled, the Entertainment Software Association was noncommittal on announcing plans for 2024. A recent report has thrown E3 2024 and 2025 into doubt, and many are wondering if E3 is done for good.
A poster over at ResetEra shared information from the Los Angeles City Tourism Board of Commissioners that covered some financial data from convention sales. At the bottom of a pictured chart, it says “* Includes E3 cancellations for 2024 & 2025*”
This information also came with a link to a prior post sharing plans from the same organization saying that E3 2024 and 2025 had already had dates booked in advance.
When E3 2023 was canceled in the spring, attributed to a number of factors, ESA President and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis was asked if the show would be back in 2024. At that time, he said, “We're committed to providing an industry platform for marketing and convening but we want to make sure we find that right balance that meets the needs of the industry,” but made no commitments.
When reached for a comment by GamesIndustry.biz, an ESA spokesperson said that the shows are not canceled, but that they are “currently having conversations about E3 2024 (and beyond)” and have made “no final decisions”.
So, there’s still no definite answer, so speculation based on the rumors is sure to continue. Some have been wondering if E3 is gone for good or has outlived its place in the industry, especially as so many developers have been holding their own events around the time when the 2023 event was planned. Events that we saw recently included Summer Game Fest, the Xbox Games Showcase, and Ubisoft Forward.
