China's attempts to bring Covid under control in Shanghai using severe lockdown restrictions for 25 million people has resulted in iPhone and MacBook production being suspended in the region.
As Nikkei Asia (via MacRumors) reports, two key Apple production partners have been forced to suspend production in their facilities located in and around Shanghai due to Covid-related restrictions. Pegatron, which supplies between 20-30% of the iPhones manufactured for Apple, has closed two facilities located in Shanghai and Kunshun.
The other company impacted by these restrictions is Quanta, which produces the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Neither laptop is thought to have been produced at Quanta's Shanghai facilities since the beginning of April. Dozens of other local suppliers and production partners are being impacted, too.
Apple relies on multiple suppliers in different locations, and you can understand why when production takes a hit like this. Last year Apple suffered production problems due to China running out of power, so this isn't a new problem for the company to deal with. How much of an impact this latest suspension has on the supply of iPhones and MacBooks will ultimately come down to the length of the lockdown and if Apple's other suppliers can ramp up production to cover the shortfall.
