Paramount is making a Sonic Cinematic Universe, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sets up five movies and shows based on Sega's beloved characters. Video game movies don't have a great track record in Hollywood, but Paramount played a big part in bucking that trend in 2020. The release of Sonic the Hedgehog brought the Blue Blur to the big screen, and after delivering a character design more faithful to the games, the movie was a big hit. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was announced shortly thereafter as the studio began planning to turn the long-running video game franchise into Hollywood's latest cinematic universe.
Franchises have always been a key part of Hollywood's success, with shared movie universes dating all the way back to Universal's Monsters franchise that began in the 1930s. The Marvel Cinematic Universe's rise during the 2000s marked a turning point, though, as Disney and Marvel Studios' success produced many copycats. The result was the creation of the DC Extended Universe, MonsterVerse, and Dark Universe, while Star Wars, Conjuring, Transformers, and other movie franchises expanded with spinoffs and TV shows. Paramount clearly positioned Sonic the Hedgehog 2 as a massive player in establishing the unofficially named SCU.

After the first Sonic the Hedgehog kept its focus on Sonic and Dr. Robotnik's rivalry for the powerful golden rings, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 introduces key characters like Knuckles and Tails, and new pieces of mythology, like the Master Emerald. The sequel's positive reviews and record-breaking box office opening for a video game movie are great signs for Paramount, as the studio already has a few projects in development.
