Beloved British actor Idris Elba has taken himself out of the running to play James Bond in the next film to follow Daniel Craig's long run. The actor said at the World Government Summit in Dubai this week that he is more interested in playing and promoting his Luther character.
«You know, a lot of people talk about another character that begins with 'J' and ends with 'B,' but I'm not going to be that guy. I'm going to be John Luther. That's who I am,» Elba said, as reported by The Associated Press.
Elba returns to play Luther again in the new movie, The Fallen Sun, which releases on Netflix on February 24. «It's very dark,» Elba said of the TV show. «We've been working on the television show for about 10 years and so the natural ambition is to take it to the big screen, and so we're here with the first movie.»
For a long time, fans have suggested enthusiastically that Elba could be the next James Bond. Even the longtime producers of the series said they like Elba.
Craig played James Bond in five films, ending with 2021's No Time To Die. The question of who will play Bond next is something movie fans want the answer to, but we still don't know.
Producer Barbara Broccoli said the next James Bond movie will be a «reinvention» of the character, and it could take some time to find the right person. «It's about a reinvention, and, 'Where are we taking it? What do we want to do with the character?'» she said. «And then, once we figure that out, who's the right person for that particular reinvention?»
Whoever gets the role will need to sign on for numerous films over a decade, Broccoli said.
