Hulu cancels Patton Oswalt’s Marvel show M.O.D.O.K. after just one season. Last summer the obscure Marvel supervillain with the freakishly huge head and acronymic name got his own showcase show on streaming service Hulu. M.O.D.O.K. the series went on to be a hit with critics, currently holding an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Marvel shows have of course come to be old hat thanks to the cascade of them that has been released on various outlets in recent years. But M.O.D.O.K. stood out from that big Marvel crowd for a lot of reasons. For one, the show featured the use of stop motion animation, giving the whole enterprise a fun and off-beat feel. Secondly, the humor on M.O.D.O.K. tended more toward the edgy and irreverent than is normally seen on family-friendly Marvel properties. The show even committed near-sacrilege by making fun of Marvel characters like Iron Man in ways that would seem more suited to a cheeky DC show like Peacemaker.

Unfortunately there doesn’t appear to be space for the M.O.D.O.K. way of approaching Marvel in a world dictated by Kevin Feige and Disney+. As reported by Variety, Hulu has canceled the unique animated supervillain show after just one season. This leaves Hit-Monkey as the only remaining Marvel show on Hulu’s roster, though that series is expected to get the axe as well.
The writing was of course on the wall for M.O.D.O.K. and all other non-Disney+ Marvel shows the second Feige and Marvel Studios took over the TV side of production. Clearly the plan here is for the Marvel TV universe to have the same kind of consistency as the cinematic universe, and that consistency can’t be maintained with projects being developed on multiple
