Whether it's holding up the weight of a star or destroying the planet by walking, the Hulk has gone from possessing simple monstrous strength to being one of the strongest beings in the Marvel Universe. Like many other powerful heroes, Hulk's been affected by «power creep», the phenomenon in which a character's abilities are escalated to a ludicrous degree.

With Hulk: Grand Design — Monster by Jim Rugg, fans may finally have an answer to why the Hulk's strength has steadily climbed to ridiculous levels. Retelling the Hulk and Bruce Banner's personal history, the first time General Thunderbolt Ross takes on the green-hued behemoth is shown. The comic notes that "Doctor Banner and the military bombard the Hulk with more and more gamma radiation" but that it only "makes Hulk anger--and stronger!". Another reference to the radiation's true powers are shown when the Leader revives hulk by bathing him in gamma rays, with the Hulk acknowledging how much more powerful he now feels. The history laid out suggests that Hulk's repeated exposure to gamma radiation has helped him become the overwhelming force that he is today.
