Huawei's first foldable smartphone of 2022 is the Mate Xs 2, and unlike the foldable phones that have hit the market in the past year, it sports an outward folding screen rather than an inward folding one. Its main competitor is Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 3, the second best-selling foldable smartphone after the Galaxy Z Flip 3. So how do they compare to each other?
Except for Samsung, Huawei is the only other manufacturer with a thriving foldable smartphone line-up. It has released a new model every year since launching its first foldable smartphone, the Mate X, in 2019. However, 2021 was the first time it launched a clamshell-style foldable smartphone. Huawei sells the device under the name Huawei P50 Pocket, and it is the first real competitor to Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 3 smartphone.

Since the Mate Xs 2 folds outward, there is only a single display, unlike the Galaxy Z Fold 3, which has a separate display for use when folded. In its folded state, the Mate Xs 2 has an appearance similar to a phone with a wrap-around display. The improved hinge system, which now features two rotors, allows for the smallest of gaps on a foldable smartphone when the device is folded. Thanks to new lightweight materials, the phone is lighter at 225 grams than the Galaxy Z Fold 3, which weighs 271 grams. The Mate Xs 2 features a 3D fiberglass back and comes in black, white and purple. In contrast, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 has Gorilla Glass Victus on the back and is available in black, silver and green.
