Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has had unprecedented staying power in the world of video games, likely having to do with just how much there is to do — but just how many unique locations does Skyrim have? Two traits can make or break an open world experience: the map has to be interesting to explore and there has to be enough to discover. Some games like Breath of the Wild emphasize adventure and freedom, while games like Elden Ring focus on uncovering as many items as possible for lore. But Skyrim pushes for both by creating a nearly incomprehensible number of unique locations on its map, leaving almost zero possibility for the game to grow stale without multiple playthroughs.
To be clear, this does not mean that all of these locations are accessible via the map, but instead that these locations have names and areas that are unique unto themselves. A map with over 600 icons for each of these locations that allow players to fast travel would have been impossible to use, as the icons would be even more crowded than they are now. In actuality, there are only 338 locations that are accessible via Skyrim's map, which may sound like a lot but is only a little more than a half of the total number of unique locations.

The exact number of Skyrim's unique areas is a whopping 670, which can be shorthanded to «nearly 700» to emphasize its absurdity. While more does not necessarily equal better, this number dwarfs more recent open world titles with larger maps: Skyrim is estimated to be around 15 square miles (based on a conversion of the map cells) while Final Fantasy 15 has a map of 700 square miles.
