Season 3 of Netflix's The Umbrella Academy finally showed how Harlan and Viktor's powers work differently. The events of The Umbrella Academy season 2 explained why Harlan and Viktor's powers were so similar. However, there are subtle contrasts in how the pair use and control their powers, particularly since Viktor left Harlan in the 1960s timeline.
In The Umbrella Academy season 2, Harlan came close to drowning until Viktor gave him CPR and saved his life. Unbeknownst to Viktor, he transferred particles of his power to Harlan while saving the boy, meaning Harlan also acquired Viktor's temperamental powers. Fast forward a few decades, and Harlan is re-encountered in The Umbrella Academy season 3, except he now goes by Lester Pocket and has resorted to listening to various tapes to control his reactions to external stimuli.

Though it initially seemed as though Harlan and Viktor's powers work in much the same way, Harlan's are subsequently revealed to be much more powerful in comparison since he had far more time to understand them. Both characters rely on sound to channel their powers, but Harlan can use soundwaves that are inaudible to most — whereas Viktor cannot. This, in turn, means Harlan can draw more power from fewer resources and reach a far greater distance than Viktor can. Harlan's familiarity with his powers is most clearly shown in the scenes between himself and Viktor, during which he taught Viktor various skills to control their shared power.
