Diego's power inconsistency was a major problem that arose from The Umbrella Academy season 3. Introduced as a main character from the beginning of the hit Netflix series, Diego was able to curve the trajectory of objects in the air. However, in The Umbrella Academy season 3, the focus on Diego pivoted away from his abilities and toward his relationships with Lila and Stanley — and while the show successfully explored his character development in season 3, it came at the cost of consistently undercooking how Diego's powers really work.
In The Umbrella Academy season 1, Diego's powers mainly manifested when he used knives at short and long-distance. His knife-throwing abilities were so impressive that he never missed his target. In season 2, Diego's ability to change the trajectory of objects was extended to bullets, as revealed in the season finale when he saved Five's life by redirecting the bullets of The Handler's Temps army. This seemingly newfound ability not only allowed Five to complete his mission but was instrumental to The Umbrella Academy in saving the world (again).

However, The Umbrella Academy season 3 created even more inconsistencies concerning Diego Hargreeves. His powers reverted back to how they originally appeared in season 1: as a very talented knife-thrower. He was no match for the guardians he faced in a changed Hotel Oblivion narrative, and there were several instances, especially in the latter half of the season, where his ability to redirect objects mid-flight could have been shown and utilized.
