Larger than life and almost 60 years in waiting, Godzilla vs. Kong brought the Titans together again — however, with a sequel slated for 2024, the next movie already has the perfect villain. A remake of 1962’s King Kong vs. Godzilla, the film delivered everything anyone could want, including an enemy that’d unite the two after a brutal battle. However, after Mechagodzilla, how much larger, more sinister, and delightfully over-the-top can the series go for a sequel?
Surprisingly, Godzilla vs. Kong isn’t the first to get a sequel, and in 1998 the original film got a secret one. Released by Bowen Designs, Kongzilla was a 12” collectible that fused “mankind’s most primitive ancestor” and their “deadliest reptilian adversary” into a new Toho-style monster. A mini-comic included with the statue detailed the origins of the creature. Forged from pieces of flesh left behind in the aftermath of the alluded 1962 film and the research of a “crazed scientific genius," Kongzilla was unleashed.

While it’s debated whether the Monsterverse should introduce Space Godzilla, Destoroyah, or even bring back King Ghidorah, Kongzilla makes for a perfect opponent. Pulling on past plot threads and continuing the jovially B-movie tone established by Godzilla vs. Kong makes for a grand entrance for Kongzilla. Creating an enemy that hybridizes some of the Monsterverse’s most powerful kaiju combatants is one of the few ways the series can hope to top the Mechagodzilla reveal for Godzilla vs. Kong’s finale.
