It's no secret that Ghost Rider has long been at the forefront of Marvel Comics’ horror titles, and a recent variant cover by Pepe Larraz for an upcoming one-shot looks to celebrate the character’s fiftieth anniversary in style. Releasing in August, Ghost Rider: Vengeance Forever #1 not only ties into the current Ghost Rider title but also pays tribute to the character’s storied history.
The Johnny Blaze iteration of Ghost Rider made his debut in 1972, created by Gary Friedrich, Roy Thomas, and Mike Ploog. Borrowing his name from a Marvel western character and his look from Golden Age hero the Blazing Skull, Johnny Blaze was a stunt motorcyclist who sold his soul to the demon Mephisto to cure his stepfather from cancer. In exchange, Blaze was bonded to the demon Zarathos, transforming into a flaming Spirit of Vengeance to punish the wicked and send them back to Hell. Over the years, other characters have taken up the Ghost Rider mantle to battle nightmarish villians. Danny Ketch, Robbie Reyes, and Alejandra Jones have each been the Spirit of Vengeance in recent years, but Johnny Blaze has remained a constant presence throughout.

This August, Ghost Rider: Vengeance Forever #1 by Benjamin Percy and Juan Jose Ryp will be honoring the character’s anniversary by looking back at the previous fifty years of continuity. The story will also tie into Percy’s current run on the main title, as the issue solicitation from League of Comic Geeks states that Blaze will be meeting a new character named Necro the Tattooist, who “uses his needle to bring dark truths to the surface.” The solicit goes on to further detail that“what follows is not only a wild tour
