A gamer managed to turn their Steam Deck into a dual-screen system that borrows ideas from the Nintendo DS. Players enjoy having the ability to take their video games on the go with them, which has led to the creation of a number of different handheld consoles, including the highly successful Nintendo Switch and the Steam Deck.
The Steam Deck first saw release in February 2022, allowing gamers to take their favorite PC titles with them wherever they go. An upgraded version of the portable system was released in 2023, bringing with it a better screen and longer battery life. Since its launch, a good number of PC titles have become Steam Deck verified, making it easy for players to take much of their Steam library with them.
A Reddit user named TyePower shared images of something that they were able to put together: a Steam Deck with a second screen attached to it, similar to what is found on the Nintendo DS. TyePower shows that they have The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D running on the device, a great nod to their main inspiration for attaching the additional screen. While it was already possible to run Nintendo games on the Steam Deck, this modified device should make it easier to play Nintendo DS titles on Valve's system.
TyePower also posted how they got the second screen on the Steam Deck to work, along with everything that was used to modify the system. The extra screen is a 7-inch portable monitor that was attached using a detachable mount which can be removed when the device is not in use. The portable monitor is powered by a battery pack that is attached to the Steam Deck through the use of magnets. TyePower used a Nintendo emulator that allows a two-window mode that runs while in the desktop feature of the handheld. Other than a few adjustments, the gamer stated that they did not have to do much else to get things up and running. They also mentioned that the device is not too heavy despite the second screen and that the battery life is great.
