Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s creative director has revealed where the game ends.
Rebirth is the second part of Square Enix‘s Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy, which means it won’t conclude the story.
Because of this, fans have been wondering how much of the overall story Rebirth will cover.
This has now been confirmed by Tetsuya Nomura in an interview on the official PlayStation Blog.
Nomura explained that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth tells the story in a different order than the original Final Fantasy 7, meaning although the second game will end at a certain location, others may have been held back for the third game.
“We have mentioned this a few times before, but the order in which you can explore the locations is not the same as the original Final Fantasy VII, and there are some shifts in the order,” Nomura explained.
“For example, Wutai, one of the major locations, is not part of the route in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and will be visited in the next one.
“Although there are some changes in the order of the locations, the locations depicted in this title extend up to The Forgotten Capital, where the greatest fate of Final Fantasy VII awaits you.”
Without spoiling anything, The Forgotten Capital is the location of one of the most talked-about ‘shock’ plot twists in Final Fantasy history – as such, it appears that Rebirth may end with this moment as a cliffhanger, to prepare players for the third game.
Square Enix announced on Thursday that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be released on February 29, 2024, on two discs.
Unlike Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which was released for PS4 in 2020 before making its way to PS5 and PC the following year, Rebirth won’t be available for Sony’s last-gen console.
