Shortly before release, rumors circulated about Square Enix potentially being worried about Final Fantasy 16's pre-order numbers, concerned that they didn't match or exceed the pre-order numbers of its predecessor Final Fantasy 15. It seems like it had no need to panic though, as not only has Final Fantasy 16 managed to sell over 3 million copies, but it's also completely shattered the record for the best retail launch of a PS5 game in Japan.
According to numbers collected by Japanese outlet Famitsu, Final Fantasy 16 has sold 336,000 physical copies since launch, completely blowing the previous record holder out of the water. Before the launch of Final Fantasy 16, it was Elden Ring that was sat in second place with 90,000 copies, with Resident Evil 4 Remake in third place with a slightly lower total of 89,000 copies. To put that into perspective, Final Fantasy 16 has sold almost quadruple the amount of physical copies of its closest competitor.

Not only that, but these numbers don't take into account digital sales either, which suggests Final Fantasy 16 is most likely the best selling PS5 game of all time in Japan, something which Square Enix will surely deem a huge success. There's no telling right now how close it is to matching Final Fantasy 15's launch window, especially since Final Fantasy 16 is a PlayStation exclusive when the previous game wasn't, but smashing a record set by Elden Ring is a pretty good sign your game has succeeded.
You may be sat there thinking that 336,000 physical copies in a week isn't that impressive in the grand scheme of things, but the games indutrsy in Japan is a little different to how it is in the West.
