If you need any more evidence the Nintendo Switch has Japan on complete lock, then here it is: even with Final Fantasy XVI backing it, the PS5 couldn't outsell the hybrid system last week. Famitsu statistics reveal (via Gematsu) the PS5 — disc console and digital edition combined — sold 85,385 units. Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch (base model, OLED, and Lite combined) managed 105,990.
The game itself was the best-selling title of the week, with 336,007 copies sold. It actually completely eclipses anything else — second place goes to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom at 25,155 units — available last week, but that hasn't translated into enough PS5 consoles shifted to see it take top spot in the hardware charts. Final Fantasy XVI will likely have long legs, though, as high sales continue throughout 2023.
Compared to past Final Fantasy titles, Final Fantasy XV managed 716,649 sales in Japan in its first week while Final Fantasy VII Remake sold 702,853 copies. As such, Final Fantasy XVI marks a significant decrease across the first week of availability. Yesterday, Square Enix announced the PS5 exclusive has sold three million copies worldwide, combining digital purchases and physical shipments.
