Warning! Spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) isn't a member of Doctor Strange's (Benedict Cumberbatch) Illuminati team in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Avengers: Endgame explains why. Sam Raimi's Marvel Studios film introduced the secret superhero team from Marvel Comics tasked to make difficult choices. But unlike its print version, Doctor Strange 2's Illuminati team doesn't have Iron Man.
The Marvel Comics Illuminati roster was composed of notable characters Iron Man, Black Panther, Black Bolt, Namor, Professor X, Mister Fantastic, and Doctor Strange — each one represents a superhero sector. Meanwhile, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' Earth-838 Illuminati is slightly different and includes Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell), Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor), Maria Rambeau's (Lashana Lynch) Captain Marvel with Black Bolt (Anson Mount), Mister Fantastic (John Krasinski), and Professor X (Patrick Stewart). Namor and Black Panther's absence makes sense given the state of MCU, but Iron Man could have easily been given a spot among Doctor Strange 2's cast, and yet, that isn't the case. It wasn't revealed why Tony Stark isn't part of Doctor Strange's Illuminati team, but Avengers: Endgame indirectly explained this.
