Elon Musk’s tenure as Twitter CEO is coming to an end. Musk today announced he’s finally found someone to replace him as chief executive of the social media company.
"Excited to announce that I’ve hired a new CEO for X/Twitter. She will be starting in ~6 weeks!” he wrote in a tweet(Opens in a new window). (X refers to the new umbrella company Twitter now falls under.)
Musk refrained from naming the incoming executive, so let the speculation begin. In the meantime, the tweet means Musk is coming through on his promise to step down as CEO, although he still plans on holding a major influence over Twitter’s direction.
“My role will transition to being exec chair and CTO, overseeing product, software & sysops,” he added in his tweet.
Musk has always said he only planned on leading Twitter temporarily(Opens in a new window) as CEO, with the goal of finding a permanent replacement to lead the social media platform over the long-term. But during his short stint as CEO, Musk has made numerous controversial changes at Twitter, including laying off a majority of the staff, reinviting banned users to rejoin the platform, and phasing out the old verified system for paid blue checkmarks.
In December, Musk decided to poll Twitter users about whether he should step down as CEO, vowing to abide by the results. A majority of the poll respondents, at 57.5%, told him he should vacate the position. But Musk decided to stay on, and merely tweeted: “I will resign as CEO as soon as I find someone foolish enough to take the job!”
