Elden Ring allows Tarnished to imbue their weapons with Ashes of War, which unlock special abilities and attacks using Focus Points (FP), but some are more overpowered than others. Many weapons come with Ashes of War equipped, and players may choose certain starting classes to acquire Ashes of War earlier on. Unlike the standard and heavy attacks for certain weapons, Ashes of War should be used to unleash devastating damage only occasionally during the fight. Players may level their Tarnished's Mind stat to increase FP and make these abilities more readily usable, but choosing the right Ashes can make all the difference. Thankfully, players have developed comprehensive tier lists for Elden Ring's Ashes of War, giving new and veteran Souls-like players a clear view of which upgrades to obtain.
Elden Ring takes place in the Lands Between, where Tarnished battle for the honor of becoming the next Elden Lord. As players can swiftly discover, many Tarnished use Ashes of War to make their weapons more powerful. Unfortunately, not all weapons can be imbued with the same Ashes, as most are restricted to certain weapon types. This means not all character builds can target the same Ashes, introducing more diversity to player builds and boss strategies.
