The title of the long-awaited Dungeons & Dragons movie has officially been revealed. There have been three D&D movies to date, with the first being released in 2000, simply titled Dungeons & Dragons. However, the film received mixed reviews, and was quickly outdone in the big-budget fantasy film genre by the release of the critically-acclaimed first Lord of the Rings film, The Fellowship of the Ring in 2001. The second movie was Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God, which launched on the Sci-Fi Channel in 2005, followed by a third entry years later in 2012 with the direct-to-DVD Dungeons & Dragons 3: The Book of Vile Darkness.
Development on the latest Dungeons & Dragons film began years ago back in 2015, but the production has been marred by behind-the-scenes issues, constantly changing hands between writers and directors. Initially, West Side Story's Ansel Elgort was tapped to star, but this didn't come to fruition. Chris Pine was cast in the new Dungeons & Dragons movie in late 2020, and was later joined by Hugh Grant, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith and Sophia Lillis. Plot details (and a title) for the reboot have been kept tightly under wraps, but director Jonathan Goldstein shared back in May 2021 that production had begun on the film.
