Dune: Part Two will lay the foundation for a full trilogy and possibly even more, according to Dune screenwriter Jon Spaiths. Visionary director Denis Villeneuve brought Frank Herbert's seminal sci-fi novel to life this past fall with a script by himself, Spaiths, and Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth. Villeneuve is the second director to bring Dune to the big screen after David Lynch in 1984, though the former's version fared much better, as the second part of his adaptation was greenlit shortly after the film premiered in theaters and on HBO Max to rave reviews and a formidable box office haul.
Storywise, Dune's principal focus is the war over the deadly and inhospitable desert planet of Arrakis due to its plentiful supply of a valuable resource known as Spice. The young protagonist, Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), and his family are thrust into this conflict when his father, Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Issac), is bestowed with the stewardship of Arrakis. As the first film in a two-part adaptation, a few actors such as Zendaya and Dave Bautista agreed to smaller roles in Dune knowing their characters, Chani and Glossu Rabban, would see more screen time in the sequel. In recent days, Dune: Part Two began filling out its cast with Florence Pugh and Austin Butler in major roles.

Now, in an interview with The Playlist, Spaiths shed some more light on Dune: Part Two, saying straightforward that the sequel will lay the groundwork for a potential third movie. The second movie, slated for October 20, 2023, will cover the second half of the book, though there is a sequel novel by Herbert, The Messiah of Dune, which Spaiths and Villeneuve are
