Warning: Contains spoilers for Dragon Ball Super #84
Thirty years since their debut,Goku and Vegeta went through a major emotional upheaval, changing their characters forever in Dragon Ball Super. These two powerful Saiyans remained stable over the course of their adventures until Dragon Ball Super shook things up in an interesting way.
From its beginning, Dragon Ball Super remained faithful to its predecessor. Conscious that his characters were such massive cultural icons that fans just wanted more of them, Akira Toriyama developed a new story but remained on the path carved by his original masterpiece. This doesn't mean that Super is just repeating Dragon Ball. Secondary characters were given a much-deserved spotlight, new enemies were introduced, and it even introduced a Dragon Ball multiverse. Still, Goku and Vegeta remained the lynchpins of Dragon Ball Super, keeping their familiar traits. Goku is carefree and lightheaded, caring little for much besides training and fighting. Vegeta carries the weight of his past sins and a desire to redeem himself. The latest chapter of Dragon Ball Super, however, hints that both men's outlooks could change dramatically.
