Thanks to the anime’s Tournament of Power story, the Dragon Ball franchise already has the perfect way to redeem Yamcha. Widely regarded as one of Dragon Ball’s weakest heroes, Yamcha has been in great need of a redemption arc for years. However, there’s been no sign that the anime has any plans to make him relevant again.
In Dragon Ball Z, Yamcha was shown to be on par with the other human Z-Warriors. Though he failed to make an impact in any of the show’s major battles, Yamcha did have a few impressive moments in the filler episodes, such as the times he beat Recoome and Olibu. Dragon Ball Super, on the other hand, did far less with his character. And when Yamcha finally did get a spotlight episode of his own, multiple jokes were made at his expense. Making matters worse is the fact that Yamcha was sidelined from all of the action. Characters like Tien, Master Roshi, and Krillin were able to participate in the fight with Frieza’s army and the Tournament of Power, but Yamcha was left at home for both battles. His exclusion created the impression that he was too weak to be of help.

While Yamcha’s declining presence in the anime seems like a bad omen for his future, Dragon Ball Super’s poor treatment of him can actually be used to save his reputation in the next anime. Yamcha’s side story during the lead-up to the Tournament of Power revealed that he was secretly expecting to be invited to join Goku’s team. But when it became apparent that no invite was coming, Yamcha grew disappointed.
