After The Matrix Resurrections flopped at the box office, it's possible the entire Matrix franchise might have reached its end. As recently outlined in detail by Scream 2022 (aka Scream 5), Hollywood is currently living in the age of the «requel,» films that serve to reboot a dormant franchise while also including some legacy characters and adding to the stories told previously. Some of the biggest examples of this phenomenon are Halloween 2018, Jurassic World, and Ghostbusters: Afterlife, but The Matrix Resurrections most definitely fits the mold too.
Following a nearly two-decade break afterThe Matrix Revolutions, The Matrix Resurrections definitely did need to reboot the franchise, but it also brought back Neo and Trinity to lead the plot. While opinions are mixed as to whether or not The Matrix Resurrections is the best Matrix sequel or the worst, it most definitely wasn't a box office hit. Whatever one thinks of it, that can't be denied.

Many had held out hope The Matrix Resurrections might turn out to be the sequel that The Matrix had always deserved, but instead, it may well be the final nail in the franchise's coffin. That said, this doesn't necessarily have to be the end. After all, the Terminator franchise survived multiple failed reboots. However, perhaps instead of asking whether or not The Matrix franchise will have a future, one should really be asking whether or not the franchise should have a future.
