Director Roland Emmerich’s latest effort, Moonfall, has bombed in its opening weekend, bringing in a paltry $10 million on a $140 million budget. The science-fiction spectacle, which stars Oscar-winner Halle Berry and The Conjuring franchise leading man Patrick Wilson, marks Emmerich’s first return to the disaster genre since 2009’s 2012. While Emmerich didn’t have much luck with that film’s North American release either, it did go on to perform well internationally, ultimately saving it from being considered a major flop.
At present, things don’t look quite as promising for Moonfall. The film has already garnered ridicule online, though it has also managed to attract a small but dedicated fanbase that can’t get enough of its over-the-top and downright preposterous action. The story focuses on the unlikely pairing of Brian Harper (Wilson) as an astronaut unfairly dismissed by Nasa ten years earlier, Jo Fowler (Berry) as a top-ranking Nasa official, and blogger KC (John Bradley) as they take on a perilous mission to save the world. The moon has fallen out of its orbit, creating utter havoc on Earth’s environment and someone needs to go up into space and set things right again. Harper, Fowler, and KC are humanity’s best hope.

As exciting as Moonfall’s plot may sound, so far it’s not proving to be quite enough to bring audiences into theaters. At a time when COVID fears mean many people still aren’t comfortable going to the movies, releases are practically required to provide something spectacular to entice viewers.
