Uncharted Tops $100 Million At The Box Office, Sony Hints At Sequel

Uncharted hit cinemas last week as the video game adaptation bandwagon rolls on. It even kicks off with a short PlayStation cinematic confirming the studio is in this for the long haul. The Last Of Us will hit the smaller screen through HBO, but now won't be here until 2023, and you'd have to think the likes of God Of War and perhaps even the Horizon games are prime for the big screen. Perhaps that badass movie The Rock teased a while back will be him assuming the role of Kratos.

Less than a week after the first Uncharted movie arrived, it also appears Sony has plans for at least one more movie already in the pipeline. Sony revealed the movie made $106 million worldwide during its opening weekend, referring to Uncharted as a “new hit movie franchise”. The use of the word franchise implies there may well be as many Uncharted movies as there are games. There's certainly plenty more story to tell.

As for where Uncharted stacks up when compared to other video game movies, pretty damn good. As highlighted by Fandango's Erik Davis, $44 million of the $106 million Uncharted raked in during its first three days was through ticket sales in the US. While it's unclear where that places it on a worldwide scale, that makes Uncharted's opening weekend the fourth biggest in video game movie history. Only Sonic, Tomb Raider, and Detective Pikachu rank higher.

Deadline reports Uncharted's four-day numbers are even more impressive and far exceeded Sony's expectations. The studio predicted Uncharted would make $30 million at the domestic box office over the course of its first four days in theaters. It has actually made $51 million, and $139 million worldwide.
