An incredible piece of Doctor Who fan art pays tribute to the history of one of the series most iconic recurring threats, the Sea Devils. Incumbent Doctor Jodie Whittaker is set to bow out of the role in an upcoming special this autumn, which will coincide with the BBC’s centenary celebrations. Before that, however, the Thirteenth Doctor will star in a penultimate adventure, “Legend of the Sea Devils,” that sees the return of one of an iconic monster from the classic series.
Introduced in the 1972 serial “The Sea Devils,” under the Third Doctor, Jon Pertwee, the Sea Devils were a marine race that ruled the Earth centuries before humanity and allied themselves with the Doctor’s rival time lord, the Master, to reconquer the planet. They weren’t seen again until the 1984 serial “Warriors of the Deep,” in which they partnered with their aquatic cousins, the Silurians, to take control of nuclear missiles from an underwater military colony. Now, “Legend of the Sea Devils” sees their return in a story set in 19th-century China, which also features a notable figure from history: Pirate Queen Madame Ching.

Artist Raine Szramski has created an incredible piece of art for the Celestial Toyroom fanzine that summarizes the history of the Sea Devils throughout Doctor Who.
