The film was also an early career highlight for Lea Thompson, who played the role of Marty's mother Lorraine. Thompson has gone on to star in many films and television series including the sitcom Caroline in the City, of which she was the star, and recent guest appearances in the sitcom The Goldbergs. In recent years, Thompson has also moved into directing, with her feature debut The Year of Spectacular Men released in 2017.
