Walt Disney Studios is currently having an extraordinary year at the box office. Marvel projects have also bounced back to record-breaking form after some financial duds in the recent past. Disney had four of the five biggest flops in 2023, according to Deadline’s calculations. Nevertheless, Disney has made a comeback at the box office, with a number of overperforming successes this year.
At the time of writing, Disney’s cumulative box office collection in 2024 has officially crossed the $3 billion mark.
Deadpool & Wolverine and Inside Out 2 have proven to be the frontrunners of Disney’s outstanding box office performance this year. The latest MCU film has managed to amass a global take of $824.1 million so far, according to Deadline. The sequel has already surpassed the total grosses of its predecessors, with 2016’s Deadpool taking in $783 million and Deadpool 2 taking in $786 million.
Meanwhile, Inside Out 2, has so far taken in $1,555.1 million worldwide, accounting for almost half of Disney’s current box office haul this year. Moreover, its offshore drop was recorded to be a mere 28%, despite the movie entering its eighth weekend.
Aside from the aforementioned titles, there are multiple projects yet to be released this year that will almost definitely increase the huge box office haul that Disney has accumulated this year. The company’s remaining 2024 slate includes titles from established franchises, such as Moana 2, Alien: Romulus, and Mufasa: The Lion King.
Furthermore, Deadpool & Wolverine is expected to reach an even higher box office total before its theatrical run concludes. It has already become the highest-earning R-rated movie of all time at the domestic box office and should continue to contribute heavily to Disney’s box office total in 2024.
