One talented developer is recreating the popular third-person survival horror game Dead Space as a '90s PlayStation 1 game, demaking it in low poly graphics and giving its terrifying atmosphere a retro makeover. Retro-inspired games and demake projects have grown exceedingly over the years due to advances in indie game development technology and easily accessible software that breeds creativity. From games like FromSoftware's Elden Ring being demade with blocky, pixelated PS1-era graphics to the comeback of 2D pixelated platformers from the 1980s, the nostalgia of retro games has created a new gaming community that continues to garner developers and fans of older games.
Released in 2008, Dead Space quickly became a cult classic and universally favored as one of the best third-person shooters of its decade. Combing intense sci-fi survival horror gameplay and third-person mechanics with claustrophobic levels, the title created a brand-new immersive horror experience for players. With the introduction of a unique dismemberment system that allowed players to remove limbs from the grounded sci-fi world's numerous disfigured Necromorphs, Dead Space quickly spawned a sequel in 2011 which followed in the steps of its predecessor and received critical acclaim due to its new features emphasis on psychological horror. Sadly, the disappointing release of the action-oriented Dead Space 3 fell short and left fans disappointed, with EA cancelingDead Space 4 shortly after.
