When it comes to powerful Force wielders in Star Wars, Darth Vader is always at the top of the list. His strength is feared and revered throughout the galaxy. Of course, it's only natural that he would want his son, Luke Skywalker, to be just as strong as him in the ways of the Force, and therefore would use his overpowered Force ability to test him.
Darth Vader has a wide array of Force powers he can use beyond his famed Force choke. The Dark Lord is capable of creating lightning, forcefields, levitating, and much more. Recently, it's been shown that Vader can even use the Force to survive a fall from space. In Darth Vader #17 by Greg Pak and artist Rafaelle Ienco, Vader is caught in an explosion after slaying Bokku the Hutt. While plummeting to the surface of the planet Jekara, he uses the Force to create a makeshift escape pod out of burning debris. After crashing into a mountain, Vader cuts himself out of the pod, and walks away unscathed.

If Vader can do this, then no doubt he believes that Luke can, too, or any proficient Force user for that matter. Vader actually puts this to the test when he and Luke engage in a dogfight during the events of Vader Down, by Jason Aaron and Kieron Gillen. During the fight, Luke crashes his X-Wing into his father's ship, and the two ships go down. As this happens, Vader states, "If he is truly strong in the Force… this will not end him." And he's exactly right. Both Luke and Vader survive their crash landings.
