Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red used AI to recreate the voice of a deceased Polish actor for the Phantom Libery expansion, a new report revealed.
Bloomberg confirmed yesterday the developer used artificial intelligence to recreate the voice
of deceased Polish actor Miłogost Reczek for the Phantom Liberty expansion. The Polish developer had the option to replace the voice actor entirely, revoicing his character in the base game, but ultimately decided against it, as Miłogost Reczek was one of the best Polish voice talents, and his performance as Viktor Vektor was considered stellar.
Instead of replacing Miłogost Reczek entirely, CDPR had another voice actor record the new lines for the character then used a software called Respeecher to create an algorithm that changed the new voice actor's voice to sound like that of the original actor. The whole process received approval from the deceased's family.
Given how much Cyberpunk 2077 deals with themes like the use of AI, what CD Projet Red did sounds rather appropriate. It was also an excellent way to celebrate the deceased voice actor and the legacy he left behind.
