Crazy Rich Asians made a mark when it debuted in theaters in 2018 and introduced viewers to several talented actors of Chinese descent. While there are still anticipations about the second outing, might not happen anytime soon.
Crazy Rich Asians centered on the relationship between Rachel Chu and Nick Young. When Rachel decides to accompany Nick to Singapore, she soon discovers that her boyfriend is a “crazy rich asian” and that his family is one of the wealthiest families in Singapore. Against all odds — and against Nick’s disapproving mother — their relationship proves to be stronger than anything despite everyone on Nick’s side trying to put Rachel down.
Of course, fans are eagerly waiting for an update about Nick and Rachel’s love story. But director Jon M. Chu revealed that Crazy Rich Asians 2 won’t be happening unless there’s already a “better” script.
“There are a lot of questions about Crazy Rich Asians 2. I always promised the cast, I will not bring them back unless we get a script that’s better and has as much urgency as the first movie. And I think we just haven’t gotten there yet,” the director told The Hollywood Reporter.
Chu continued, “The first movie, even though people think, ‘It’s like the book, so the second book should fit in,’ it’s actually not. There’s a lot of shifting, architecturally, and so it’s not a straight translation. And then there are characters that you want to see in a movie that are part of the book. We’ve done some versions and it’s never quite hit. The bar is high for all of us to come back to do that, so I’m not going to put the audience through that until we’re ready to do it.”
Crazy Rich Asians is based on the 2013 novel of the same name by Kevin Kwan. Chu directed the feature from Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim’s screenplay. It starred Constance Wu as Rachel Chu, Henry Golding as Nick Young, Gemma Chan as Astrid, Michelle Yeoh as Eleanor Sung-Young, Awkwafina as Goh Peik Lin, and more.
