Last month, Blizzard unveiled their Community Discords Program, with the stated goal of increasing community manager presence, create opportunities for developer discussion, and raise the profile of community Discord servers, though reception took a sharp turn after critically-minded members of the community revealed some questionable stipulations. Today, Blizzard has updated the terms to address some of these concerns, though many of the critical content remains, making it seem that the broadly branded «Community Program» may be aimed more at dedicated content creators rather than general fan-based communities.
Immediate ControversyWhile the ideas initially stated in the blog reveal sound like great ways to engage individual communities, some of which are dedicated to one specific element of the game like Warriors or Druids and therefore rarely get as much direct developer attention, a review of the Program Member Agreement by critically-minded members of the community revealed strict terms that seemed to only benefit Blizzard at the expense of the program's users, such as the requirement to install sentiment tracking software, a permanent and everlasting clause prohibiting any negative or disparaging statements toward Blizzard or its games, and giving Blizzard sole discretion to remove contributor content while waving any ability to contest those decisions. This resulted in several prominent community Discord server managers openly stating their intent to abstain from joining the program, while encouraging others to avoid it as well.
