The trailer for City of God: The Fight Rages On begins by emphasizing the two decades that have passed since the events of the film, beginning with a focus on a photojournalist who finds himself dropped into the ongoing drug war. The battle for control over the City of God rages on, and Rocket finds himself caught up in a daily fight that only seems to escalate.
This is expanded on by the plot of the HBO Original series as it unfolds in the early 2000s. That’s when the release of a young drug dealer from prison puts Cidade de Deus right back into conflict.
