CD Projekt has laid off 29 employees after rescoping its Witcher spin-off game Project Sirius.
The layoffs mostly impacted developers at The Molasses Flood, the American studio behind Flame in the Flood, which CD Projekt acquired in 2021.
“Because the project changed, so has the composition of the team that’s working on it – mainly on The Molasses Flood’s side,” a CD Projekt spokesperson told VGC.
21 US-based developers have lost their jobs, as have eight employees who had been working on the project in Poland.
CD Projekt said last October that it had “an innovative take on The Witcher universe” in development at The Molasses Flood.
“The game will be set in The Witcher universe, but it differs from our past releases in that it targets a much broader audience,” CD Projekt CEO Adam Kiciński said at the time. “Sirius will provide both single-player and multiplayer gameplay.”
However, in March, the company suggested it was going back to the drawing board with the game after re-evaluating its scope and commercial potential.
In a regulatory announcement last week, CD Projekt told investors it had concluded work on “defining a new framework” for Project Sirius.
CD Projekt announced last October that it was working on a new trilogy of Witcher games as well as spin-offs.
In addition to Project Sirius, the latter includes a “full-fledged remake” of the original The Witcher.
