Augments are important buffs you can get in Zombies, with Field Upgrades acting as abilities you can equip for your loadout. Unlike other Augment types that have to be found during a Round, Field Upgrades are part of your Operator's build. The Field Upgrade you choose can be integral to defeating the undead, lasting to later Rounds, and even completing Easter Egg quests.
Field Upgrades are described as Augments alongside Perk-A-Cola bonuses in and various Ammo Mods. Similar to the other Augment types, Field Upgrades can be enhanced through additional Minor and Major Augments gained when you level up. By using one Field Upgrade more, you can unlock modifications to the special equipment to improve its already powerful ability.
Any Field Upgrade you equip going into a Zombies run can be activated by pressing L1 + R1 on your controller. It must recover from a cooldown before it can be used again.
