The first new Blizzard IP in six years has been announced and it’s a survival game with modern day humans in a fantasy world.
Even before the acquisition announcement by Microsoft, and the scandal over their working conditions, Blizzard were already in a difficult spot. Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 have suffered constant delays and releases like the remake of Warcarft 3 have done serious damage to their previously enviable reputation.
Many suggested that they need to strike out with a new franchise and now that seems to be exactly what they’re planning, with what’s described as a ‘brand new survival game’ set in a ‘whole new universe’.
Work on the new game has apparently only just begun but the concept art so far seems to imply modern day people journeying to some kind of high fantasy world.
Although officially announced on Blizzard’s own website the reveal is really more of a job ad, with the company seeking a ‘diverse team of developers’ to help make the game.
This is accompanied by a second piece of artwork showing a humanoid character in a complex piece of armour, that may hint at a Monster Hunter style approach where defeated creatures are turned into weapons and equipment.
Whatever the game is it clearly won’t be out for a long time, although it will end up as Blizzard’s first new IP since Overwatch in 2016 – and their first new game of any kind under Microsoft.
As such, it’s also very likely that the game will be released as an Xbox exclusive. Indeed, the official description describes it as being for ‘PC and console’, not consoles…
