The Big Bang Theory star Kunal Nayyar has revealed how the show's stairwell scenes are actually filmed. CBS' hit sitcom followed the lives of a group of friends (Sheldon, Leonard, Howard, Raj and Penny, at first) based in Pasadena, California, with many of the core Big Bang Theory characters living together in the same apartment building. This made it the go-to hangout for the group, and since its elevator had long been busted, the crew needed to walk four flights of stairs every single time.
When The Big Bang Theory season 1 premiered in 2007, the elevator in the building was already broken. The show belatedly revealed how it got that way through flashbacks, as Leonard (Johnny Galecki) explained to Penny (Kaley Cuoco) how he became Sheldon's (Jim Parsons) roommate in the first place. Apparently, Howard's (Simon Helberg) rocket experiment went wrong and Sheldon had to put the paraphernalia inside the elevator to save everyone from the impact of its blast. It wasn't fixed until the Big Bang Theory finale, forcing the gang to go up and down the stairs for years. While this was a favorite long-running gag, the scenes apparently proved quite difficult to shoot.

During his recent appearance on the UK's Channel 4 Sunday Brunch show (via The Independent), Nayyar detailed how the cast really filmed The Big Bang Theory's stairwell scenes. The actor revealed that, because they weren't on location and had to build the set inside a studio, there was actually only one flight of stairs. This meant that the actors had to run back down to the bottom a few times in each scene, to make it look like they were climbing to the fourth floor. Read Nayyar's full
