Marvel Comics is hinting the Eternals have failed in their greatest mission — and the X-Men are to blame. Created by Jack Kirby, the Eternals have never been A-listers in the comics. Still, the brand has become a lot more well-known now they've made their big-screen debut as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the MCU, the Eternals were sent to Earth by the Celestials to wipe out the Deviants — creatures who threatened to wipe out humans before civilization could develop.
In the comics, the Eternals are slightly different. The Eternals and the Deviants are evolutionary offshoots of humanity, created by the Celestials as rivals. The Eternals have waged war with the Deviants since the dawn of time, and their wars have shaped Earth's history. One particular conflict was even responsible for the sinking of an entire continent, the basis for the legend of Atlantis. The Eternals have considered themselves successful, with the last surviving Deviants — such as the warlord Kro — hiding from their attention.

But Marvel Comics has just hinted the Eternals have failed in their mission. The publisher has begun to promote their next summer event, a crossover called «Judgment Day» that will feature the Eternals, the X-Men, and the Avengers. They've taken to social media to share a teaser for the event, a line of dialogue attributed to Druig. "For a million years, Earth has been protected from the Deviants," Druig reflects. "But we made a mistake. We missed some… The mutants."
