During Below Deck Mediterranean season 3, lead deckhand João Franco and second stewardess Brooke Laughton had a «yachtmance» that started on shaky ground, and while they tried to make it work off-season, their relationship didn’t last. João, who is a self-described flirt, had his eyes on third stew Kasey Cohen while also being interested in Brooke. João tended to Kasey, who was struck with debilitating motion sickness and had trouble performing her job. She was grateful for his attention, and the two formed a connection.
João and Brooke also became closer during Below Deck Med season 3, and despite feeling attracted to Kasey, he ended up choosing Brooke. Things got a bit tense when João and chief stew Hannah Ferrier butted heads. She often thought he was misogynistic while he criticized her for being into material things. During a heated moment between João and Hannah, Brooke stepped in and defended João, cementing his feelings for her.

The couple decided to make their status official and took their romance off the boat. Below Deck Med's Brooke and João met each other’s families, and she even took a trip to Zimbabwe, where he is from. Sadly, during the Below Deck Med season 3 reunion, they revealed that they were no longer together. João later shared that the reason they broke up was that Brooke had cheated on him. While they were apart, he had found incriminating messages on her Instagram. When he went to confront her in Fort Lauderdale, where she was working, Brooke confessed that she had been with another man. João walked off the boat she was on and admitted to feeling “broken.”
