The Last of Us has received its share of undue hate for including LGBTQ+ content. Bella Ramsey is speaking out against those who won't give the show a shot due to this element, and she thinks critics are missing out.
The Last of Us is an adaptation of Naughty Dog's 2013 game of the same name. In the series, humanity has been pushed to the brink of extinction by the Cordyceps infection, a fungal disease that changes humans into violent zombie-like creatures. The franchise has long focused on humanity's attempts to adapt to such a world. The Last of Us episode 3even focuses on two other survivors: Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett), two men who fall in love with one another and try to live as peacefully as they can.

In a new interview with GQ, Ramsey spoke up against the homophobic and transphobic backlashThe Last of Us has accrued. “I’m not particularly anxious about it. I know people will think what they want to think. But they’re gonna have to get used to it," Ramsey said. «If you don’t want to watch the show because it has gay storylines, because it has a trans character, that’s on you, and you’re missing out. It isn’t gonna make me afraid. I think that comes from a place of defiance.”
Shortly after The Last of Us premiered, Ramsey came out as non-binary and clarified that she uses she/her, he/him, and they/them pronouns. In her interview with GQ, Ramsey also expresses how she and co-star Pedro Pascal bonded over her LGBTQ+ identity.
