Xbox owners will still be getting the Christmas gift of a Baldur’s Gate 3 port this year according to an update from Larian Studios boss Swen Vincke. Of course, this was originally not in the cards, as Larian said Xbox owners would have to wait until at least 2024 as they attempted to get local co-op working on the Xbox Series S. Eventually, Microsoft bent, allowing Larian to release Baldur’s Gate 3 without local co-op on Xbox Series S, making a 2024 release possible. All that said, we haven’t really received an update on BG3 for Xbox in a while.
Thankfully, according to Vincke, the Xbox version of BG3 is currently in the playtesting phase and a 2023 release is still on track. No specific release date was provided, but sometime in December seems like a reasonable timeline.
“Latest on the Xbox [version of Baldur’s Gate 3] -- being actively playtested, still on schedule for this year. We'll announce the exact release date when we're sure it's done.”
Microsoft has said Baldur’s Gate 3 splitscreen could still happen on Xbox Series S, but it will likely take quite a bit of engineering to make it happen. For now, Larian is getting the game out with some sacrifices on Xbox Series S (something that may become more common as the system’s lack of power becomes an issue for current-gen-exclusive titles).
