It’s long been known for some years that Atlus have been secretly working on a new IP that is neither Persona nor Shin Megami Tensei-related. And for a time, it’s been known simply as Project Re Fantasy but aside from a few snippets of concept art here and there, Atlus have refused to show anything pertaining to in-game cutscenes or gameplay alike. That is, until today during Xbox’s game Showcase where that project was finally given a name and a sizeable amount of footage to go off of. Its name: Metaphor ReFantazio — created by a newly formed internal team at Atlus, referred to as Studio Zero, whose members comprise of those having previously worked on the Persona series’ past three mainline entrants.
So far as premise, Metaphor ReFantazio looks to be carrying over many of the same elements that fans of the wider Shin Megami Tensei series, should find familiar. Namely a focus on turn-based battles — with supernatural creatures fighting alongside the main roster — and what looks to be an in-game calendar bookmarking key moments in the narrative. But on the subject of narrative, aside from the game taking place in an alternate-history version of the present day with a focus more on high fantasy as its backdrop, its announcement trailer didn’t really give too much away. Nevertheless, a new IP from Atlus is certainly something to look forward to, after years of speculation as to what its final form may look like. Metaphor ReFantazio releases next year across Xbox Series X/S & PC.
