Metaphor: ReFantazio is officially coming to PlayStation 5, PS4, and Steam alongside the previously-announced Xbox Series X|S and Windows platforms.
Revealed today during a livestream centered around the game, Atlus confirmed the PlayStation releases for the upcoming RPG.
From Katsura Hashino — director of Persona 3, 4, and 5 — Metaphor: ReFantazio is Atlus' first full-scale fantasy RPG, and it's coming sometime in 2024. Hashino spoke a bit about the game in an interview, including revealing the intention behind choosing Metaphor as the title.
"When I think about the themes explored in past SMT or Persona games, the stories always tie back to how people should live their lives, in the present day, and that was an idea we really wanted to capture here, too. So, rather unabashedly, we decided on Metaphor as the title for this game."
The director also said Atlus wants Metaphor to be a third RPG pillar for the company, alongside Persona and Shin Megami Tensei.
The game was first revealed as part of Xbox's showcase earlier this month, leading to speculation as to what platforms the game was coming to. But similarly to Persona 3 Reload, it only took a few days for Atlus to confirm additional consoles.
Atlus has been teasing Metaphor as far back as 2016. For years it was known simply as Project ReFantasy, aiming to be "a return to the roots of where the Japanese games industry began with fantasy role-playing games."
