Just like Star Wars: Outlaws, physical copies of Assassin's Creed Shadows will require an internet connection for installation, a move that seems to be becoming the norm for Ubisoft titles.
Earlier this year, Ubisoft caused quite a stir when it revealed that Star Wars: Outlaws, one of its most anticipated releases of 2024, would require an internet connection to install, even if players chose a physical copy of the game. That was quite controversial when it was announced (alongside the game having a pricey deluxe edition with a season pass), and it seems that Ubisoft is about to land in hot water again.
Just a few hours ago, Ubisoft finally pulled back the curtain on Assassin's Creed Shadows (once known as Assassin's Creed Red) with a CGI reveal trailer that showcased the game's dual protagonists and Feudal Japan setting. As is Ubisoft tradition, pre-orders for Shadows and its various editions went live almost instantly after the trailer dropped, revealing that it'll follow in Outlaws' footsteps.
As pointed out by Twitter user Wario64, the cover art for Assassin's Creed Shadows features a message that will be familiar to anyone who got annoyed at Star Wars: Outlaws a few months ago. Right on the front of the box is a warning that the game requires an internet connection to install, which seems to be becoming a trend for single-player Ubisoft games.
This essentially means that if you don't have an internet connection, then Assassin's Creed Shadows is going to be nothing more than an expensive coaster for you. If, like a lot of people, your connection isn't the strongest, then it also means that you're going to be waiting a while on launch day to get access to the game.
