DC's Black Label imprint is taking on an unexpected character for material in the form of Aquaman for his next adventure,Aquaman: Andromeda. The Black Label imprint is DC Comics' means to publish standalone, often horror-oriented miniseries based around familiar characters. Aquaman's character and story seldom take either a mature or horror route, but Andromeda promises to be a psychological horror.
As per CBR, the plot synopsis forAquaman: Andromeda focuses on the «scientists, survivalists, and soldiers» based on the Andromeda submarine as they «investigate the sunken mystery.» They aren't alone in this search, as the pirate Black Manta also wants to uncover what may lie in the oceans' depths. But wherever Black Manta goes, sworn enemy, Aquaman isn't far behind, but they both may risk finding themselves swallowed by whatever mysterious abyss await them at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

At face value, for the average reader, Aquaman may sound like an odd character for Black Label to take on for a special limited series run. After all, Aquaman and horror have rarely (if ever) coexisted together in the same comic book. At best, Aquaman has had appearances in company-wide crossover events that happened to fall under the horror genre, like DC House of Horror from 2017, but his inclusion was always inconsequential. The story wasn't a horror story because of Aquaman, he was simply included in a horror story. There are no notable Aquaman horror stories to speak of, unlike his Marvel counterpart Namor the Sub-Mariner.
